Break the rules

Break the rules…oh yeah…break the rules.

A popular song from a popular movie, 2 decades back, and very forward-looking in all ways then^

If you have heard of the song, then blistering barnacles, congratulations… you may just have Viking blood in you (read ancient)…skol!😅

This rant is about a closely guarded secret that usually favors the brave and the foolish.

I was always the one to break the rules.

Break the rules around

  • stereotyped thinking…. Say what? (no pun intended)
  • waiting for direction
  • expecting opportunity hand outs
  • playing safe, and
  • suppressing emotions

And it was not always like this.

I struggled through school and college with my introvertism, which acted like a shield, and i felt darn safe (lost) within the crowd.

Then I changed, slowly but steadily at work – by observing my leads, learning from customers, competing with peers and having fun.

This was when I started seeing how belief brought people together and we built complex systems, day by day. Nothing was impossible, for we were audacious in our goals and feverish in our actions.

I learnt the

  • power of action or inaction
  • advantage of being prepared
  • importance of prioritizing “what” and “why” over “how”

If I were to summarize how I blitzed through my 25 years of IT, it was by

  • always raising my hand first
  • putting people and interactions above all else
  • instilling a feeling of pride
  • bringing competition to the mix

What did this bring about?

Some fancy but memorable branding.

People guy~ (my peoples are the best 🤟, its a mutual thing), Red projects handler° (dunno how this one stuck but stuck for good 😅), Creative (and the performance pressure everytime, man..🙄), Throw-anything-will-catch guy (thanks Vivek for this one, this was probably my best call sign 😊)

And what did i gain – trust, dependability, learnings, and lastly, fantastic opportunities.

So what is your secret recipe?

~ undoubtedly, my most cherished and coveted one

° My (green) college mates always opine that I created issues and then solved them, to bag this title at work 🤣

Once you identify the strengths in people then you can do magic and achieve what outcomes you desire. I had this experience with the team I handled once upon a time and the team was as diverse as it could get, however trusting them with a task and asking them to deliver gave me a good insight to each one. After which it was just a matter of who to assign what kind of job. Trust me all was good
